Vi siete mai chiesti come mai questa porta si apre su un passaggio coperto?
Salendo le scalette da via San Rocco incontriamo infatti un ingresso ad arco – sovrastato dallo stemma delle famiglie Caetani (le onde a sinistra) e dei dell’Aquila (l’Aquila a destra) che ebbero il dominio sul borgo per secoli – il quale ci immette su un passaggio coperto, della lunghezza qualche metro, per poi aprirsi di nuovo su via Giosa a destra e via Madonnella a sinistra.
Nell’articolo sul castello di Sperlonga ho accennato al fatto che per il normanno Riccardo dell’Aquila, installatosi a Fondi, il castello doveva avere una precisa caratteristica: apertura verso Fondi e chiusura verso Gaeta.
La “Porta alla Marina” si apriva e si apre ancora verso Fondi e fino al 1935 era protetta da una prima porta più interna, questa inserita nelle mura del castello. Immaginiamo dunque i due archi, quello verso il mare e quello verso il castello entrambi dotati di porta.
L’artificio aveva una semplice funzione militare. Mentre gli eventuali invasori tentavano di abbattere la prima porta, veniva serrata la porta successiva, molto più solida, e gli invasori non potevano fare uso di travi per picchiarvi contro, al fine di abbatterla, poiché il gomito tra le due porte non dava abbastanza spazio per poter manovrare un lungo palo.
Precauzione che tuttavia non impedì le numerose incursioni e in particolare la terribile invasione dei corsari turchi del 1532.

Everyone involved really went above and beyond.
Most importantly, Irene is a wonderful tour guide, deeply knowledgeable about the history of Sperlonga and the surrounding area. We learned so much during the walking tour of Sperlonga and the tour of the winery. The wine and food were also excellent.
